An Insider's Guide

Arriving in a new city (particularly one in which you don't speak a word of the language) is always intimidating, but it helps to have a connection with someone already there. And in my case...I did! One of my favorite things about attending MIIS is the international diversity of our student body. A good friend of mine in Monterey is actually a native of Prague, and happened to be there during the first few days of the practicum. I am so thankful for his willingness to play navigator and tour guide!

Our adventures included walking the old King's Road (where kings of old would promenade from Old Town to New Town and up to the castle, prior to their coronation ceremony), watching one of the world's oldest astronomical clocks chime the hour (along with a million other tourists), and exploring the famous Wenceslaus Square (where the Velvet Revolution took place) which was still covered in Christmas lights.

Additional items of note:

1. Hot cocoa with raspberries and LOTS of whipped cream is the perfect treat after a long day out in freezing temps.

2. The Bethlehem Chapel has foundations dating back to the 14th century - when the renovations finish, visitors will be able to actually touch the stones!

3. The miniature Eiffel Tower look-alike is actually the same height as the real thing...if you measure from the top to the banks of the river down the hill!
